Greene County Elementary students ended the 2017 portion of the school year with the fifth annual Jingle Read. Every student in grades K-4 was able to pick out a book to read and keep in a RAM Reader distribution. Families began arriving at about 2 pm, with staff estimating that more than 250 parents, grandparents and friends came to read with their children.
Jingle Read began with a short program featuring favorite Christmas songs adapted with reading-related lyrics. A highlight was a skit to “The Twelve Days of Christmas” with principal Scott Johnson wearing a tutu.
After the program students and their guests went to various rooms to read with their families. Each child had a finger flashlight while they read. After about 15 minutes of reading, Santa Claus stopped in to hand out candy canes.
School staff thanked Greene County Medical Center for sending volunteers to read with students whose family couldn’t attend. “We would also like to thank all the parents, grandparents and special people in our students’ lives that came to help Jingle Read be so special,” a school spokesperson said.
